Seconn Expands Press Brake Department With Six-Foot Precision Unit

In a continued commitment to lean, efficient operations, Seconn Fabrication
has invested in a high-precision, hydraulic six-foot press brake to benefit
the many customers of this sheet metal fabricating facility. The Amada
HDS 5020, which is designed for long runs of small parts such as
electrical boxes and brackets, complements the company’s existing
Amada 8- and 10-foot press brakes.
“Our new press allows us to use the same programs we have developed
with our other press brakes,” explains Rich Sweet, Seconn’s Manufacturing
Manager. “This minimizes set up times.” According to Sweet, the extra
press brake capacity will also help improve Seconn’s already impressive
on-time deliveries. “We can move parts even faster,” he adds.
The 50-ton, five-axis back gauge HDS 5020 has a maximum 82-inch bend length, a 67-inch distance between
frames, 19.7 inch open height, 7.8-inch stroke, and 16.5-inch throat. Ram repeatability is ±0.0004 inch and
the back gauge can travel 27.5 inches.
The high-speed, heavy-duty 5-axis back gauge is designed specifically to reduce positioning time and to easily
handle staging of complex parts. Ergonomically designed CNC control provides total control over the bending
process. Seconn opted for special machine setup software to improve operator and brake productivity – the
HDS 5020 is programmable off line so machine and operator can make other parts while more difficult parts
are programmed.
A press brake is used to bend or form flat sheet metal that has been punched or laser cut. “This unit is currently
being used to fold metal into parts that are then used as assembly components in larger products, like kiosks or
other point-of-purchase displays,” concludes Sweet.
